Somiedo Natural Park is located in the central area of the Cantabrian Mountains. Geographically corresponds to the municipality of Somiedo, with 39,164 hectares. In 2011 the Vuelta a España finished for the first time in this Natural Park with the Estonian cyclist winner Rein Taaramäe. It has the following protection figures:Natural Park declared in 1988 Declared a Somiedo Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2000 The Somiedo Nature Reserve is one of the last bastions where nature is pure. Its landscapes, its fauna and flora, its gastronomy, and its people make this corner a privileged place. From its rugged landscape that ranges from 400 meters to almost 2,200, its impressive lakes, those of Saliencia and del Valle , its brañas, such as Pornacal , Mumián or Sousas , stand out, in which we can find the teitos, constructions that used the vaqueiros of elevation made with broom roof.
